Holistic Midwifery Care

Serving Athens, Cleveland, Knoxville, and Chattanooga areas

What is a Midwife?

We are Licensed Midwives, who focus on more traditional and holistic methods, to provide comprehensive maternity care to healthy, low risk women desiring a low-interventive, out of hospital birth experience. As midwives, we assist women by providing evidence based prenatal care, risk assessment and monitoring, home delivery, postpartum care and more. We help our clients create goals, discover their options and walk through pregnancy feeling informed and empowered.

The midwifery model of care is centered on the belief that birth is a natural, sacred process, not a medical event. It focuses on personalized, holistic care that supports a woman's physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being throughout pregnancy, birth, and beyond. We provide continuous, compassionate support, promoting informed choice, empowering women to trust their bodies, and facilitating safe, natural births in the comfort of home. This model emphasizes minimal intervention, honoring the unique journey of each mother while ensuring the safety of both mother and baby.

 Frequently Asked Questions

  • Homebirth is when a baby is born at home with an experienced midwife, providing a personalized and supportive environment for women with low-risk pregnancies. Midwives are trained to monitor health and progress and respond to emergencies if necessary.

  • Home birth gives the mother freedom and autonomy to move and act freely, to listen to her body and baby in a supportive and protected environment. At home, there is no worry about foreign germs, or strangers interrupting your flow. With a trained an attentive midwife to observe and guide when needed, a home birth is just as safe, sometimes safer that at the hospital for low risk pregnancies.

It’s not about home vs. hospital. It is about having a choice, being heard, informed, and respected.

  • It was an honor to have Grace as a midwife. She is gentle, caring and nurturing every step of the way, especially during birth. She listened to each of my concerns and gave me the freedom to labor in the way my body and mind desired. Grace and Candice took the sweetest care of me post birth when I was struggling. I can’t recommend her enough. I don’t know of many other midwives who pour their hearts and souls into what they do, but Grace definitely does. She serves her mamas first. Thank you for everything Grace!

  • "For my 7th baby, it was really important to me that everyone in my birth space trust in the design of birth and my ability to navigate on my own. I only wanted support and love and guidance at my request. Grace was exactly that! I felt her calm assuring presence as she witnessed me through labor and birth. And when I reached out for help after my baby was born she was right there ready to help in the ways I needed. I felt honored and my wishes respected the whole time. My husband and I are incredibly thankful for her! "

  • I switched to SMC at 38 weeks and when I met Grace and Candice I immediately felt at ease knowing they would be the ones taking care of me. They both had such a calm presence which I really needed at that time of my life due to moving cross country and some unforeseen circumstances. I unfortunately was a hospital transfer, but both of them came with me and stayed with me the entire time. They also made sure to advocate for my wishes and didn’t allow for anything to happen that I wasn’t comfortable with. They also were so helpful and compassionate during postpartum. Im grateful they were apart of my birth experience. They are amazing women and I can’t recommend them enough

  • I loved using Sovereign maternity Care. They were helpful with any questions I had and helped calm any fears that were bothering me.
